7 Ways to Use the Kaywa Reader to Market Your Business

February 19th, 2008 MobileFreak

If you’ve ever wondered what those 2-D bar codes on many tech-related blogs are all about, it’s most likely due to the Kaywa Reader. While the reader has been out there for some time now, it is definitely something that can get your creative juices flowing about potential applications.

Several technology blogs already use the Kaywa Reader as a way to provide their content to mobile devices, which is great. But that is a rather early, simple application of this tool that could truly be used in creative ways.

What is the Kaywa Reader?

To summarize what it does, the Kaywa Reader is an application stored on your mobile phone that enables your phone to scan and interpret 2-D bar codes. The 2-D bar codes themselves typically contain URLs, but may also contain a phone number, email address, or any text fields, for example. Most of these bar codes include the use of a URL, which is immediately brought up on the phone’s browser upon scanning.

Often the greatest innovations are not new technology, but the creative, non-obvious application of a technology.

So what are some kick-ass ways to use the Kaywa Reader?

The Kaywa Reader has been in use for a while now, but the actual applications of it in the U.S. have just begun. So what great innovations can we think of for the Kaywa Reader? Here are a few applications (most/all are already in use today) that might spur some thoughts:

  • Measure direct responses from print ads
  • Provide discount codes based on location
  • Link to purchase page from direct mail brochure
  • Market an online auction
  • Include in product manual for most recent mobile video instructions on installation or use
  • Include on event poster with link to directions
  • Contests!

So what are we missing? What other applications can we think of? (we just might use them here…)

Shame Kaywa works on so few handsets. You should also check out Quickmark.com.tw and there are a few others, but it’s pretty hit and miss as to which unit suits which phones.

I really wish this was an easier choice (or even better someone was able to offer my clients a white label solution that all handset could download from).

Cheers,

Hi Dean,

The Kaywa Reader works with much more devices than on the site. All Nokia Series 60 2nd and 3rd edition should work. And also for the Sony Ericsson’s.

However we have not tested them, that’s why we don’t put them yet on the site.

Best regards
Roger
