An Open Source Twitter Client for iPhones
July 23rd, 2008 MobileFreak
We have covered several mobile Twitter interfaces over the past year or so, and some of them have already caught on in a big way.
The reality is that we’re still in the top of the second inning in this battle over mobile Twitter clients, with more entrants still to enter the game. The latest is called iTwtr, and creator Dan Phiffer has certainly set it apart from other Twitter clients in a number of ways.
First, it starts downloading your data from your Twitter account in the background upon login. This is slick.
Second, you can download the source code and run the Twitter service from your own box.
Third, the robust configuration options allows you to access just about any combination of Twitter feeds and replies you are interested in.
Finally, the About page is fantastic. Ridiculously simple and easy to read, yet informative.
Go play around with it yourself and see what you think. Thanks for sharing Dan!

Thanks for the kind write-up! The next step for iTwtr is probably going to be packaging it up as a WordPress plugin. The current API-based method of retrieving content isn’t going to scale at all, so I need to be sure getting one’s own server running is as easy as possible.
Great stuff Dan. We’re looking forward to seeing that wp plug-in.
Keep us posted!
