Words cannot express the gratitude that we at MobileMammoth have for the contributions that Steve Jobs made to the mobile industry. Yet his impacts went way beyond any single industry, or any single country. His impacts were felt worldwide, and they were as much cultural as they were technical.

I remember seeing Steve Jobs one afternoon near Palo Alto, as we were both parking at a jogging trail near Stanford known as ‘The Dish’ for the giant satellite dish which stood next to the trail. This was back in 2001 before the iPhone and just months before the first iPod came out. Yet I was still in awe because of what he had accomplished already.

Steve Jobs was indeed a visionary. He went against the grain. He turned industries on their heads.

Thank you Steve.

If any of you are scrambling to find a good grill recipe today, go download this $4.99 app for your iPad or iPhone, and you’ll have access to 250 grill recipes at your fingertips.

Weber, the company best known for making classic American grills, has recently released the Weber’s On The Grill iPhone and iPad app on the App Store, and it is a hit. Very simple, yet very useful, the app includes plenty of tips and even short video instructions for those of us who can only learn visually.

One of my favorite features is a built-in timer, which launches directly from the recipe itself — now that is using the mobile app technology right. Now you have no excuse to get your grilling done just right this summer. Enjoy!

If you got the pun in the title of this post, then you know what SEO is, and therefore may be interested in this iPhone app. Dubbed the SEO Analysis Tool, this iPhone app was recently rated the best mobile app for SEO by the good folks at Bruce Clay, Inc.

A free app available from iTunes, SEO Analysis Tool returns a great deal of information about a given domain name, and also offers suggestions on how to improve search results for the domain.

The tool is simple and intuitive, although we agree that the interface could use some improvements. Specifically, the report headings are too close to one another, and it does not adjust to a horizontal/landscape display if you rotate the phone. Hopefully we’ll see that updated in the next version. Regardless, for a free app, it’s a nice tool to have on your phone.

While the app currently does not have any user ratings in the iTunes App Store, the top rating in the SEO category from Bruce Clay trumps that, as he and his team are very well respected in the SEO field.

In the spirit of World Backup Day a few days ago, we here at MobileMammoth thought it would be a good time to remind folks how to backup your iPhone. The same process works for your iPad or iPod as well.

Here it is in just a few easy steps.

How to Backup Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod:

Plug your iPhone (or other iOS device) into iTunes.

In the iTunes menu on the left side of your screen, right-click on your phone.

From the drop-down list, select “Back Up”.

Wait until the backup process is complete before disconnecting your device.

Backing up your iPhone or other iTunes device is super easy to do, and you should make a habit of doing it on a regular basis, and prior to upgrading to a new version of iOS.

The 2011 Oscars air tonight, and there is much buzz around all the ways viewers can participate besides the old fashioned way of simply watching it on television. As you prepare for your Academy Awards viewing activities, download the app below to impress your friends and have an inside look at what’s going on before, during, and after the actual awards show.

Oscar Backstage Pass Mobile App

Available for $.99 on the iTunes App Store, this app for the iPhone and iPad is the most dynamic and intriguing of all. ABC is providing televised coverage of the Oscars, but they are also leveraging that into providing a total Oscars experience with this mobile app, which they just released on February 18, 2011. Viewers will get to see different camera angles not available to television viewers, and the display and options on the app will change before, during, and after the actual awards show. This one is definitely worth checking out for a buck.

Technically, you should not necessarily have to close your open apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod device. But I have always been one to close apps that are running whenever my machine starts dragging, and I like to do it on my iOS devices too.

It’s super easy to do. Here’s how:

Double tap the round ‘home’ button on the device. The running apps will display in one row along the bottom of your device.

Swipe through your open apps. Tap and hold one of the open apps until they all start jiggling. The apps currently running on your iOS device are now ready to be closed.

Close an app by tapping the red circle on the upper left corner of the app icon.

Remember, you are NOT deleting the app, you’re just closing it. It will still be there whenever you want to run it.

Tap the home button again and the open apps will stop jiggling.

Tap the home button a second time and you will return back to the normal view.

The first time I did this, I realized that every app installed on my iPhone was running. Having several open apps normally does not cause major slowness since Apple does not allow multi-threading, but I like the idea of being able to close down apps that I don’t want running all the time.

Is anyone else like me on this issue, or am I the only one that cares to close their iOS apps?

All week there have been news stories and prognostications about Apple’s upcoming product announcement in September, about how iPads cannot be made fast enough to keep up with demand, and rumors about a new TV delivery service. You’d have to look fairly hard to know that Dell also tried to make some noise this week.

On Tuesday, Dell released their Aero smartphone, which includes a 3.5-inch touchscreen and runs on Android. Some people are also aware that Dell released a tablet computer called the “Streak“. The Streak doubles as a smartphone, and also runs on the Google Android platform.

We all know about Cupertino. So does anyone care about what is coming out of Round Rock, Texas?

If you have an iPhone 3G, do NOT upgrade to the iOS 4 without reading this first.

Issue:
One of our staff members recently upgraded the OS on his iPhone 3G to the new Apple iOS 4. It was at about that time when her battery began losing power faster than it could be charged. After hours of trial and error, we were finally able to determine that the phone was trying to constantly download email from the MS Exchange server. It was constantly polling the Exchange server even though she had not touched the email settings.

Solution:
Disable the ‘Push’ feature in your mail settings on your iPhone.

Using your iPhone, go to Settings.

Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendar.

Go to Fetch New Data.

Turn off the ‘Push’ feature. Then select an interval to fetch your email messages.

For those 3G users who have not upgraded yet, I’d highly recommend you keep the above information handy.
