Last Fall, we talked about Dadnab, a service that sends schedules of various forms of public transportation across the country.

Today, we are introducing iCaltrain, a service similar to Dadnab, yet is focused exclusively on the San Francisco Bay Area transit system. The service lets you view depart/arrival times for various routes in and around Silicon Valley. It’s even highlighted on the Apple site, which I’m sure helps exposure.

To try it out yourself, point your mobile browser over to m.icaltrain.com, or if you’re using an iPhone, simply go to icaltrain.com.

The New York Times Mobile Website

Yes, the Times has a mobile version, and has had it since September of 2006. For all the NY Times readers out there without an iPhone, take a look at their mobile website if you haven’t already.

And if you have an iPhone and don’t know what I’m talking about, here is their commercial to remind you just how special the iPhone is…

A Webkinz World Without Apples

Webkinz WorldDon’t know what a Webkin is? Ask anyone who has kids between the ages of four and ten, and they will tell you. And if you have anyone at that age on your Christmas list this year, buying them a Webkin is a no-brainer. These plush toys which have a life of their own on the web are extremely popular right now, and the craze at elementary and middle schools across the country shows no signs of slowing down.

On a seemingly unrelated note, most of our readers are well aware of the snazzy web browser on the Apple iPhone, which is unlike other mobile browsers in that it displays the same version of websites you would see from your PC (or close to it).

So what in the world do these two have to do with each other? Well, at last check, the Webkinz World website does not display on the iPhone browser. This is because Webkins World uses Flash, which the iPhone does not seem to like. The Webkinz folks have yet to develop a mobile website, but surely that cannot be too far off in the future.

So now you have the knowledge to be ultra hip in the eyes of your spoiled rich neice — Get her a Webkin for Christmas, Hanukkah, or fill-in-your-favorite-holiday-here, and then warn her that she cannot check up on it from her iPhone. The fact that you know this will convince them that you are all-knowing, even if we all-know that is far from the truth. Please use this knowledge responsibly.

iPhone Day

Or “iDay”, as they called it in Boston last night, as several gadget enthusiasts waited in line for today’s 6pm ET launch of the Apple iPhone. And so it was around the country, and around the web, as the iPhone hype came to a fever pitch rarely seen for a single product.

After several rumors about stores setting a limit of one iPhone per person, Apple officially announced they would allow buyers to purchase up to two iPhones each. Steve Jobs also announced today that every Apple employee would receive a free iPhone. No word yet on whether Jobs and friends are also picking up the tab for the AT&T service plan.

Here is a roundup of the coverage of the insanity about the new Apple iPhone:

iPhone Rumors, To Go Please

In keeping with the national iPhone craze this week, today we browse over to a mobile website that helps Mac fans keep track of all things Apple. MacRumors, which has been maintaining a good old-fashioned desktop site at MacRumors.com, now provides a mobile version for Apple enthusiats on the go.

iPhone Rumors Anyone?

If you look at the recent stories on MacRumors, they are clearly dominated by the Friday 6pm release of the Apple iPhone. The most interesting we saw was the swarm of people willing to pay $200 - $300 just for someone to stand in line for them. We even saw someone trying to charge $2,000! Good luck with that Milan.

MacRumors provides both a standard mobile website, as well as a WAP version.

iPhone Stores List

If you are planning to pick up an Apple iPhone when it becomes available on June 29, you just might need to bring along a sleeping bag.

Many folks are making the June 29 iPhone release an entire event, and are planning to camp out for as long as it takes to be one of the first to get their hands on the new mobile phone.

Thinking about camping out yourself, but never been to an Apple store in your area? To find an Apple store closest to you, check out this list of Apple retail stores. Then, start scoping it out that third week of June, and you’ll see when and where to claim your spot in line for the new iPhone.

You Will Toss Your Mac for your iPhone

Emily over at Textually.org just highlighted a very interesting trend in Japan, where the majority of the younger generation are now using mobile phones to the point where they don’t use a computer at all. It’s well documented how Asian countries including Japan and South Korea are significantly advanced in terms of mobile phone technology and usage. In terms of mobile adoption, Asia is typically about two years ahead of the UK, and about three to four years ahead of the US.

Is this another mobile trend that will transfer over to those western countries? Will our high school graduates in the US be using their iPhone or other mobile device in place of a Mac or PC?

Absolutely! The large majority of day-to-day computing activities for teenagers and many twenty-somethings today consists of email, IM, and web browsing. Why lug around a laptop to do those things when you won’t have to? We won’t, of course.

Just as the desktop is becoming a relic of the past for most tasks as the laptop reigns supreme, the days of the laptop dominating day-to-day computing tasks are numbered as well.

What about you? Would you be willing to toss your Mac or PC for your cell phone? What about two years from now?

You can read Emily’s review here, and the Sydney Morning Herald article here.

Apple iPhone Updates

Apple iPhone in Phone ModeI don’t know about you, but I am getting close to iPhone buzz overload, and the product is still 2 months away from general availability. If you crave more iPhone goodness, Apple has set up an email notification page to receive the latest iPhone news and updates (again, about a product that you cannot buy yet).
Of course, I signed up anyway. (I cannot wait to see how many new mobile apps it will bring…)
