A Must Visit Before Hitting the iTunes App Store

Have any of you out there sorted your way through too many iPhone apps to find what you’re looking for. And then once you buy what you think is a great app, you find out that the 14-year old “developer” seems to be better at writing marketing copy than writing code?

Enter, Appulo.us, the self-proclaimed “Solution to a flawed app store.” This site essentially provides users with links to free trial versions of iPhone and iPod Touch apps to use before they buy. Not a bad concept at all.

There are a lot of questions about this service, and many our answered on their own FAQ page.

Go take a look yourself before you buy that next app, and try it out for free. Then let us know what you think about this service. Will Apple try to stop them?

Mobile Website or iPhone App?

I ran across the iQ Search “iPhone application” the other day, and it struck me that it is not an iPhone app at all. Rather, it is a mobile website, with that unmistakable look and feel of the iPhone interface. In fact, because it is a simple website, you can use it right now on a Windows desktop if you’re so inclined. You don’t need an iPhone, an iTouch, or even a Mac for that matter.

Now, I do not have a problem with that in and of itself. The problem is when I see it included in a list of iPhone apps — it just irritates me that the author of those lists clearly don’t know what they’re talking about. If it’s not in iTunes, and it can be run on non-Apple platforms, then I say it’s not an iPhone app.

Getting back to the app mobile website itself, iQ Search can indeed be very convenient. Simply enter your search terms, then decide which search engine/social network/website you want to query. After using it a few times, I started to appreciate the ability to quickly decide which search engine would be most appropriate for that particular search.

Go check out this website from wherever you are!

Pandora Radio on Your iPhone

Pandora Radio creates custom radio stations based on your favorite artists that you specify. Despite it’s apparently uncertain future, the service has developed a huge fan following.

Now Pandora comes in a free iPhone App, available through iTunes. One unique feature of this iPhone application is that it lets users create custom music channels, without requiring an existing Pandora account.

If you’re a music fan or if you currently use Last.fm, you really need to give Pandora a try. To download Pandora for your iPhone or iPod touch, get it from iTunes.

The Real Vision Behind the iPod Touch

Apple iPod TouchIn case you’ve been in meetings or class all day, you may not have notice the loud buzz coming from just about everywhere about the slew of new Apple products announced today.

All the details on the iPod Nano, the iPod touch, and of course Steve’s presentation can be found here, here, and even there too.

But what I am most impressed with is Apple understanding the potential of the iPod touch. When you take a step back and think pre-touch, having the vision to see that an iPhone without the phone can still be a hugely valuable and popular tool is impressive.

Even when the iPod touch launched, it took the general public a little while to realize just exactly what it was. “Isn’t it just like an iPod nano?” No. “Oh then it must be an iPhone.” Nope.

The iPod touch It is this beautiful space in between, that let’s everyone enjoy the non-phone features of the iPhone, the most important of which is access to the growing number of applications that are available at the iTunes App Store. And for the thousands of techno-geeks that are waiting for an Android phone but still want to be part of the Apple party, the iPod touch is the perfect answer.

iPhone App WebSearch – Makes Site Search Easy

There’s an iPhone app out there that makes performing a site search a whole lot easier. Without it, most iPhone users have to load the website in the browser, find the site search box (assuming their is one), and run the search. Not impossible by any means but it can take a while depending on your network and the site you are searching.

With the WebSearch app, users simply tap the WebSearch button, tap the website they want to search, then enter their search phrase. No need to wait for the site to load, or find the search box.

iPhone App:

WebSearch can be found under the Productivity section in the Installer, or in the iPhone App Store.

Try it out and let us know what you think!

(Editors Note: In addition to the many mobile websites we write about, we now also cover mobile apps for the iPhone and Android platforms. And so it goes with the fast pace of the mobile web!)

Apple iPhone Web App: smartSCORECARD

We like to help our are readers whenever we can, especially those that contribute interesting comments for everyone else. So today we are highlighting an Apple iPhone Web App that one of our readers, Chuck, just mentioned in a comment on a previous post about the iGolfScorecard app.

Chuck’s company, oobgolf, just submitted the smartSCORECARD iPhone application to the Apple Web Apps store, and it’s clearly much more than a web-based scorecard. It leverages their database of courses from around the country, and it helps keep track of just how many drives you are slicing off to the right.

You can find out more about it here. Good luck Chuck!

Google's First iPhone App!

The Big G released its first ever mobile application for the iPhone and iPod Touch last week. Dubbed the Google Mobile App, the application lets you search the web or your iPhone contacts, and includes many features you’d find within Google desktop search products (one of my favorites is Google Suggest).

The Google team released this video highlighting the Google Mobile App features:

It’s interesting to see Google’s investment in the iPhone platform, considering the Google Android phones are just a few months away from reality. Still, even Google knows it will take quite a while for the Android phones to knock the iPhone off it’s perch.
