As Google continues to trim the number of stalled or money-losing projects in its portfolio, the Android platform for mobile phones is the latest project to get cut. While not a total shock as Android has continued to limp along in the face of the wildly successful iPhone platform, as well as new competition from BlackBerry App World, it does leave some scratching their heads.

There is no comment yet from Google partners whom have also invested a great deal of resources in developing phones for the new platform, most notably T-Mobile with the G-1 phone. It is safe to assume though that Google will have to either compensate those partners in some way, or perhaps release ownership (and control) of the platform altogether in favor of some open source community, thereby allowing the platform to survive and the efforts of those partners to continue.

I am disappointed as I have to admit I was holding out for a newer Android phone. Oh wel1.

(4/2/09 Edit: Yes, this was an April Fools post, as many of you quickly pointed out. Android is not going anywhere;)

Remember the early days of Windows apps when developers would hide small games or other programs within the applications? These quickly became known as ‘Easter Eggs’. It became cool to know how to find these hidden tricks.

Thankfully, those days are far from gone. One easter egg that is fairly well known among OpenOffice users but is still worth a mention is the retro Star Wars game found within the spreadsheet application called Calc.

Here’s the command:

Enter =GAME(“StarWars”) in a cell, and you are back in 1983 playing a Centipede-like version of Star Wars.

I do not use OpenOffice, but I’ll tell you where I found about this tip — it’s from a small new mobile website called HowToDude.mobi. Like it’s desktop cousin, this ‘How To’ site displays a tag cloud of topics to select from. Each How To is submitted from various users. I found several cocktail recipes, and even more techie tips, of course.

The site is very young and the content is still growing, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. If nothing more than to find a few more software easter eggs.

Mobile Website:

www.howtodude.mobi

(And here is their version of that Star Wars Calc trick for future reference:

Can’t get enough Guitar Hero? Hooked on Lost Odyssey? If gaming is your thing, then you may want to take a gander at Joystiq.

This site provides gaming reviews, news, and updates in games for all the popular gaming platforms. And Joystiq is an not associated with any game or game publisher, they don’t hype every new game that comes on the market.

Here’s a quick glance at today’s gaming headlines from Joystiq:

Rumor: Guitar Hero IV adding vocals, drums, regular DLC

Metal Gear Online beta ‘planned’ for April 25 … late night

Silent Hill V now ‘Homecoming,’ dated for September

Midnight Club: LA racing to Xbox 360, PS3, PSP on September 9

Metal Gear Online beta delayed, more info tomorrow

Of course, you can now get all this information from your mobile browser. Give Joystiq’s mobile website a try, and be the first to know about the next release of Chaos Theory before your friends.

MobileMammoth.com has learned of an odd, but interesting new feature to be included in the upcoming Google mobile phone.

What is it?
In what some are calling a bold yet questionable effort to out-feature the iPhone, Google has partnered with a Minneapolis bio-engineering firm to incorporate a feature to tell if a person’s breasts are real or if they have been artificially augmented. This team of engineers has developed wireless technology to sense if silicone is present or “nearby in a body of matter”.

The technology is not fool-proof, however. The phone must be within 7.5 feet of the breasts in question, and the phone must be held at “chest-level”, according to the engineer’s statement. Based on tests conducted in closed-door labs over the past 4 months, the tests have been “over 87% accurate.”

When will it be available?
While most analysts predict a late-2008 arrival of the gPhone, this silicone detecting feature will only be available for testing purposes on handsets sold in parts of Los Angeles and Miami, before being made available nationwide 3 months later.

I am a firm believer in creating new and interesting applications for the mobile phone, but I must say this one never entered my mind.

What say you?
My question for you is, would this feature sway you to buy the gPhone? Or do you see it as a novelty feature that you could do without?
