Google Upgrades Search UI for iPads, Tablets

Google released an update to their search UI specifically for tablets last Friday, and MobileMammoth approves.

The user experience on iPads and other tablets, and specifically the ‘touch’ experience that causes issues for some of us, is quite different from both PCs and smartphones, and Google recognizes this. They obviously also recognize the huge surge in iPad users and need to cater to that audience as well, but it’s good to see that Google does not seem anywhere near resting on it’s laurels in search.

For pure web searching, this is another reason Google will be that much harder to ‘touch’ anytime soon.

Grill Like a Pro with this Mobile App from Weber

If any of you are scrambling to find a good grill recipe today, go download this $4.99 app for your iPad or iPhone, and you’ll have access to 250 grill recipes at your fingertips.

Weber, the company best known for making classic American grills, has recently released the Weber’s On The Grill iPhone and iPad app on the App Store, and it is a hit. Very simple, yet very useful, the app includes plenty of tips and even short video instructions for those of us who can only learn visually.

One of my favorite features is a built-in timer, which launches directly from the recipe itself — now that is using the mobile app technology right. Now you have no excuse to get your grilling done just right this summer. Enjoy!

Apple Releases iWork Productivity Apps for iPhone, iPad

Apple iWork suite released for mobile devicesLost among all the talk of Apple’s forthcoming iCloud music offering was the Cupertino company’s release of the iWork suite of applications for the iOS platform. Completely redesigned for touch-screen and mobile use, the Keynote, Pages, and Numbers productivity applications are now available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad mobile devices.

We believe the key driver of this iWorks release was for the iPad, as Mac users were clamoring for the ability to read, and in some cases edit, their documents, presentations, and spreadsheets from the comfort of their iPad.

How to Backup Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

In the spirit of World Backup Day a few days ago, we here at MobileMammoth thought it would be a good time to remind folks how to backup your iPhone. The same process works for your iPad or iPod as well.

Here it is in just a few easy steps.

How to Backup Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod:
  1. Plug your iPhone (or other iOS device) into iTunes.
  2. In the iTunes menu on the left side of your screen, right-click on your phone.
  3. From the drop-down list, select “Back Up”.
  4. Wait until the backup process is complete before disconnecting your device.

Backing up your iPhone or other iTunes device is super easy to do, and you should make a habit of doing it on a regular basis, and prior to upgrading to a new version of iOS.

2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament Score Updates

We here at MobileMammoth are big sports fans, and you may have read our previous posts about how to get NCAA Basketball Tournament scores to your mobile phone (from 2010) or how to follow March Madness on your mobile phone (2008).

One of the great things about the mobile industry is that there are new developments every year, and 2011 is no different in that respect. This year, the NCAA March Madness on Demand (MMOD) may be the most exciting. It will include mobile apps for viewing live games on your iPhone, iPod Touch, and even the iPad.

The March Madness on Demand mobile apps are not yet available though should be coming out within the next few days, and we’ll update everyone as soon as that happens.

In the meantime, what mobile apps or websites are you planning to use to get your 2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament score updates?

Oscar Backstage Mobile App is a Winner

The 2011 Oscars air tonight, and there is much buzz around all the ways viewers can participate besides the old fashioned way of simply watching it on television. As you prepare for your Academy Awards viewing activities, download the app below to impress your friends and have an inside look at what’s going on before, during, and after the actual awards show.

Oscar Backstage Pass Mobile App

Available for $.99 on the iTunes App Store, this app for the iPhone and iPad is the most dynamic and intriguing of all. ABC is providing televised coverage of the Oscars, but they are also leveraging that into providing a total Oscars experience with this mobile app, which they just released on February 18, 2011. Viewers will get to see different camera angles not available to television viewers, and the display and options on the app will change before, during, and after the actual awards show. This one is definitely worth checking out for a buck.

Speed up Your iPhone or iPad by Closing Your Apps

Technically, you should not necessarily have to close your open apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod device. But I have always been one to close apps that are running whenever my machine starts dragging, and I like to do it on my iOS devices too.

It’s super easy to do. Here’s how:

  1. Double tap the round ‘home’ button on the device. The running apps will display in one row along the bottom of your device.
  2. Swipe through your open apps. Tap and hold one of the open apps until they all start jiggling. The apps currently running on your iOS device are now ready to be closed.
  3. Close an app by tapping the red circle on the upper left corner of the app icon.
  4. Remember, you are NOT deleting the app, you’re just closing it. It will still be there whenever you want to run it.
  5. Tap the home button again and the open apps will stop jiggling.
  6. Tap the home button a second time and you will return back to the normal view.

The first time I did this, I realized that every app installed on my iPhone was running. Having several open apps normally does not cause major slowness since Apple does not allow multi-threading, but I like the idea of being able to close down apps that I don’t want running all the time.

Is anyone else like me on this issue, or am I the only one that cares to close their iOS apps?

FLUD App for iPhone

The FLUD app for iPhone is truly one of the best news reader mobile apps available on the app store today.

Also available on the iPad, this iPhone app is raking in the awards, and rightfully so. It’s free, allows for unlimited feeds, and does so with the simplest design possible. Here is how the makers of FLUD describe it:

FLUD is a modern, beautiful and personalized mobile news ecosystem with a vision to empower it’s users to interact with each other to access, engage and broadcast content that is relevant to them. You probably visit hundreds of sites a week to look at content you love, but, until now it’s been a pain to do and far from classy.

You need to go download FLUD for your iPhone today.

Apple iPad Launch Draws Lines at Retail Stores

Lining up to buy the iPadThe Apple iPad went on sale at 9am this morning at Apple retail outlets and online. We ran into a few folks at the Apple store in Reston, Virginia, where they lined up to be one of the first to get their hands on the latest gadget from Apple.

There were 2 lines – one for those with reservations, and everyone else. Both lines were about 40-50 people long shortly after opening, and almost everyone seemed to be checking their iPhones every few seconds.

Don’t forget about our iPad poll – check it out and let us know if you are buying into the iPad hype!
