Speed up Your iPhone or iPad by Closing Your Apps

Technically, you should not necessarily have to close your open apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod device. But I have always been one to close apps that are running whenever my machine starts dragging, and I like to do it on my iOS devices too.

It’s super easy to do. Here’s how:

  1. Double tap the round ‘home’ button on the device. The running apps will display in one row along the bottom of your device.
  2. Swipe through your open apps. Tap and hold one of the open apps until they all start jiggling. The apps currently running on your iOS device are now ready to be closed.
  3. Close an app by tapping the red circle on the upper left corner of the app icon.
  4. Remember, you are NOT deleting the app, you’re just closing it. It will still be there whenever you want to run it.
  5. Tap the home button again and the open apps will stop jiggling.
  6. Tap the home button a second time and you will return back to the normal view.

The first time I did this, I realized that every app installed on my iPhone was running. Having several open apps normally does not cause major slowness since Apple does not allow multi-threading, but I like the idea of being able to close down apps that I don’t want running all the time.

Is anyone else like me on this issue, or am I the only one that cares to close their iOS apps?

Top 5 iPhone Apps of 2010

Apple continued to impress with the iPhone and it’s iOS platform in 2010, with an estimated 47 million iPhones shipped. Much of the increased demand came from the release of the iPhone 4, which added a new hardware design, video camera capabilities, and several other extras.

Along with that demand came a host of new mobile apps for the iPhone in 2010. Here is the MobileMammoth version of the top 5 iPhone Apps of 2010:

  1. Instapaper: Technically not released in 2010 (or in 2009;), but still a classic that is worth keeping very high in this list.
  2. Price Check by Amazon: Faster than many of the bar code scanner pricing apps, and oh-so-handy at the big box stores.
  3. Read It Later: Available in both free and Pro editions, this app is great for those who find content they want to, well, read later. It’s especially useful for those who travel on planes or trains often, as you don’t need a connection to read the content.
  4. Cut the Rope: We are all about productivity, but we have to throw in a game and this one is particularly fun and addictive!
  5. Find My iPhone: Finally free! The lesson learned here is to continue commenting on apps in the App Store. Apple does listen.

Enjoy!

FLUD App for iPhone

The FLUD app for iPhone is truly one of the best news reader mobile apps available on the app store today.

Also available on the iPad, this iPhone app is raking in the awards, and rightfully so. It’s free, allows for unlimited feeds, and does so with the simplest design possible. Here is how the makers of FLUD describe it:

FLUD is a modern, beautiful and personalized mobile news ecosystem with a vision to empower it’s users to interact with each other to access, engage and broadcast content that is relevant to them. You probably visit hundreds of sites a week to look at content you love, but, until now it’s been a pain to do and far from classy.

You need to go download FLUD for your iPhone today.

Avoid Speed Traps with this iPhone App

Fuzz Alert is an iPhone app that alerts users to speed traps, red light cameras, and even DUI checkpoints.

Fuzz Alert comes in a free version as well as the premium Fuzz Alert Pro, which is $.99 in the App Store. Fuzz Alert Pro allows the app to run in the background, or in radar mode.

These types of iPhone and Android apps have received a good amount of negative feedback from the law enforcement community, and naturally so. A quick glance at their Twitter feed, and you can see why. (While you’re there, you should follow us on Twitter to get more tips like this one!)

App Turns iPhone into Hearing Aid

iHearClearly is an iPhone app that works as a hearing aid, filtering out noise and amplifying the sounds you want to hear.

While this app does not exactly fit the demographics of the typical (relatively young) iPhone user, it could see more and more downloads as the iPhone is adopted by the older crowd as well. Heck, Nascar fans and hunters have hearing problems too.

Click the button below to view iHearClearly on the iTunes store:

Foursquare is Blowing Up

Checking in to a cafe on FoursquareFoursquare, which is arguably the most popular location-based service (LBS) out there today, is seeing a recent surge of growth due to growing awareness of LBS applications overall.

For those who are new to Foursquare, here is the official company description:

Foursquare is a mobile application that makes cities easier to use and more interesting to explore. It is a friend-finder, a social city guide and a game that challenges users to experience new things, and rewards them for doing so. Foursquare lets users “check in” to a place when they’re there, tell friends where they are and track the history of where they’ve been and who they’ve been there with.

Foursquare is viral, it’s intuitive, and it gains more value as it’s use increases. It is seeing increased competition from Google Maps for Mobile, and recently announced Facebook Places, but so far that is only propelling it’s status on the location-based scene.

Foursquare is a web application, with mobile versions for the iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Palm, and other mobile platforms. Go check it out and see what you think — Everybody’s doing it!

Read This Before Upgrading to iPhone iOS 4

If you have an iPhone 3G, do NOT upgrade to the iOS 4 without reading this first.

Issue:
One of our staff members recently upgraded the OS on his iPhone 3G to the new Apple iOS 4. It was at about that time when her battery began losing power faster than it could be charged. After hours of trial and error, we were finally able to determine that the phone was trying to constantly download email from the MS Exchange server. It was constantly polling the Exchange server even though she had not touched the email settings.

Solution:
Disable the ‘Push’ feature in your mail settings on your iPhone.

  1. Using your iPhone, go to Settings.
  2. Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendar.
  3. Go to Fetch New Data.
  4. Turn off the ‘Push’ feature. Then select an interval to fetch your email messages.

For those 3G users who have not upgraded yet, I’d highly recommend you keep the above information handy.

Has this issue bothered you before? Are there any better solutions? We want to hear from you – let us know by commenting below!
