These are heady times for Boston sports fans. The Celtics NBA Championship last night, combined with the Red Sox World Series win last Fall, and an almost-perfect NFL season by the Patriots, has provided an unbelievable run of success for Boston fans.

The good folks at Boston.com have come through as well, providing a mobile version of their website covering all things Boston. Bostonians can now read all about their successes wherever they are, and no doubt brag about it to whomever they’re with.

Oh and by the way, a quick gander at the sports section shows that a Red Sox rookie pitched a no-hitter today in his second major league start. What is going on? There must be something in the water in Beantown.

2008 US Open Scores on Your Mobile Phone

I may just have a new favorite sports mobile website. And it’s not CBSSportsline, ESPN, or Yahoo!

US Open LeaderboardWhile searching for the first round scores of the 2008 U.S. Open in Torrey Pines earlier today, I happened across SportsTap.

Dubbed “The Ultimate iPhone Sports Portal”, this mobile website displays current live scores from all types of sports. It has the look and feel of an iPhone app, but rest assured it displays just fine on most mobile browsers.

If you want to see the US Open leaderboard on SportsTap for yourself, have at it!

Your Golf Scorecard on Your iPhone

iGolfScorecardiGolfScorecard is a simple mobile web app for the iPhone or iTouch that acts as an electronic scorecard, allowing you to enter and track your scores on the golf course.

This mobile application includes a simple, intuitive interface, which is absolutely key for golfers that want to concentrate on their swing rather than some complicated application on their phone. There are plenty of other golf apps or mobile websites for the phone that include more complex features, but at some point it starts to become less about the game itself and more about how to use all the complex features.

I’m a golfer myself. In my mind, the iGolfScorecard could be a big hit among the technologically aware golfers that still want to concentrate on the game itself.

Follow the 2008 NFL Draft on Your Mobile Phone

The NFL Draft kicks off on Saturday, April 26 at 3pm ET. For the many of us who have other plans on a Saturday afternoon, we still don’t have a good excuse to be in the dark about who became the first pick of the 2008 NFL draft.

The Miami Dolphins have the first pick of this year’s NFL Draft, and if you saw last year’s standings, you already know they will need it. The Dolphins are followed by the St. Louis Cardinals Rams, Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, and the Kansas City Chiefs round out the top five picks of the draft. While people talk all day about who will be the top pick, you can be one of the first to know, even while you are at your kid’s soccer game.

NFL Teams with Sprint

If you are a Sprint customer with a Vision or Power Vision Pack, you can get the NFL Mobile app at no extra charge. Sprint used to charge a monthly fee for this until the summer of 2006, so it’s great to have that option for free (for some reason, not many I talk to realize it’s free). Features include live game play-by-play, NFL Network broadcasts, and breaking news, inuries and stats.

For those interested, here’s how to get it:

  • Text NFL to 7777.
  • Visit sprint.com/nfl.
  • Call 1-800-SPRINT-1
  • Go to your local Sprint Store.
NFL Mobile for the Rest of Us

Of course, it’s not just Sprint users that will get see every pick of the 2008 NFL Draft on their mobile phone. If your phone is web-enabled, simply go to nfl.com from your mobile browser. You get to access just about all the NFL data you could possibly consume, and you can even text message your Jets fan friend on another awful pick for the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

The Golf Channel Mobile Website

The MastersA few weeks ago I mentioned how to get Masters scoring updates from Augusta.com. Well there are other golf tournaments besides the Masters, and they are almost year-round.

To get your weekly golf fix, or to find out if someone will actually beat Tiger this week, you may want to give the Golf Channel’s mobile website a swing.

In addition to tournament leaderboards and news, this mobile website also includes a golf tip of the day, full lessons, and even a little golf trivia just for fun.

2008 Masters Scoring Updates Straight from Augusta

As golf fans are well aware, the 2008 Masters is right around the corner. Considering how difficult it is to find time to sit in front of the television for 12 hours over 2 days, this is an ideal event to get scoring alerts to your mobile phone when you are out and about.

Augusta.com, operated by The Augusta Chronicle, provides a showcase of The Masters and also provides information about points of interest in and around Augusta, Georgia.

In addition to plenty of online content about the prestigious golf tournament, including live scoring, the site send scoring updates via SMS for five of your favorite golfers during the tournament. Here is an excerpt explaining what type of alerts you can receive:

Scoring alerts, whether by SMS or e-mail, can be selected at three different levels:

* End of round: Sends one update on the player’s score and position when play finishes each day.
* Hole by hole: Sends an update each time the player finishes a hole, plus end of round.
* All changes: Sends updates anytime the player’s position changes, as well as end of round and hole by hole.

Go here to sign up. If you have one of the newer wireless plans with unlimited text messaging, you might as well go for the All Changes option.

So who will win The Masters this year? The first person to guess the winning golfer AND their winning score will win a sporty new MobileMammoth t-shirt. Just post your guess in a comment to this post.

Rules: One entry per person — if you submit your entry more than once, only your last entry will count. In the event of a tie, the first 3 winning entries will all get a t-shirt. All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, April 9, at 11:59pm ET.

Good luck!!

Top 7 Mobile Websites of 2007

We at MobileMammoth.com have put together our Top 7 Mobile Websites from 2007.

If you surf the web from your phone at all, then you really need to consider bookmarking these in your mobile browser. They are all truly useful, and will save you time all year round. So without further delay, here they are:

Top 7 Mobile Wesbites of 2007

  1. Bloglines (Skweezed)
  2. Bloglines is one of the most popular RSS readers on the web, and now that they’ve integrated Skweezer’s mobile browsing gateway, mobile users are touting it’s ease of use. If you already use Google Reader to browse your RSS feeds, their mobile version will do you just fine.

  3. The Weather Channel
  4. There are some alternative mobile weather sites out there, but so far the Weather Channel stays on top.

  5. Yahoo! Mail
  6. You will need to go here and enter your mobile phone number for the link, or type m.yahoo.com into your mobile browser and click on the Mail link.

  7. Google Search
  8. Much like Yahoo!’s directions, you will need to go here and enter your mobile phone number for the link, or type mobile.google.com into your mobile browser.

  9. FlightStats
  10. As noted by one of our readers in our mobile website contest, FlightStats provides a variety of useful tools to make sure you optimize your time on travel days.

  11. Dodgeball
  12. This social networking service lets people “check in” through Dodgeball, which in turn alerts your friends of where you are. There’s a lot more to it, so go check it out.

  13. ESPN
  14. Still the most comprehensive sports destination, and the mobile interface works well. A visit there today showed one small graphic on the mobile home page (to save bandwidth), and the navigation items on the bottom of the screen where they belong on a mobile display.

And because we always like to exceed expectations, here’s one more site for your mobile browsing pleasure…

  15. Google Maps
  16. I much prefer Google Maps over MapQuest for its accuracy and intuitive interface. The same holds true for the mobile web. To visit Google Maps for Mobile, click here and enter your mobile number, or text “MYLOCATION” to 33669.

Enjoy these sites, add some more in the comments to this post, and Happy New Year!
