2011 British Open Leaderboard Updates on Your Mobile Phone

The 2011 British Open, which as many of you know is one of the four major golf tournaments on the PGA Tour, begins next week at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England.

Of course, we here at MobileMammoth are here to help you prepare so you don’t find yourself fumbling around for leaderboard updates while you’re stuck in a meeting, or, worse yet, shopping of some sort.

Here are a few tried and true mobile websites that will provide the latest British Open Scoring updates as they happen (HINT: Do not try to access these sites from the actual event, as cell phones are offically banned at the British):

We here at MobileMammoth are big sports fans, and you may have read our previous posts about how to get NCAA Basketball Tournament scores to your mobile phone (from 2010) or how to follow March Madness on your mobile phone (2008).

One of the great things about the mobile industry is that there are new developments every year, and 2011 is no different in that respect. This year, the NCAA March Madness on Demand (MMOD) may be the most exciting. It will include mobile apps for viewing live games on your iPhone, iPod Touch, and even the iPad.

The March Madness on Demand mobile apps are not yet available though should be coming out within the next few days, and we’ll update everyone as soon as that happens.

2011 Super Bowl Score Alerts from Twitter

The 2011 Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers kicks off at 6:30pm ET today. If you’re one of the many unlucky who will be traveling for work or attending your nephew’s birthday party, we feel for you!

All is not lost, however. Each year brings more and more ways to follow the Super Bowl scoreboard from almost anywhere. We did a similar post on getting Super Bowl scores on your cell phone back in 2007, and today the options are much greater.

2010 Fantasy Football Draft Kit for Mobile

iPhone App Streams 2010 Tour de France Video

The Versus channel has developed an iPhone app that provides live video from the 2010 Tour de France. At $14.99, it’s not the cheapest iPhone app in the App Store, but by all accounts it is well worth it for cycling and Tour de France fans.

NCAA Basketball Tournament Scores to Your Mobile Phone

Three short years ago, we posted details about how to get NCAA scores on your cell phone. As we gear up for another round of March Madness in 2010, we did a quick review of that article and it made us realize how much has changed since then.

One of our recommendations in 2007 was to get text message alerts from CSTV. Coincidentally, about 11 months later, CBS announced is was acquiring CSTV, and it then became part of the newly named “CBS College Sports Network.” (We will assume from this sequence of events that maybe, just maybe, the CBS execs read MobileMammoth.)

Today, of course, it goes without saying that you can get NCAA scoring updates via text message alerts, mobile websites, and through mobile apps for your iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry devices. The best we’ve seen in 2010 so far have come from, well, CBS Sports.

Winter Olympics 2010 Vancouver Mobile Website

The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are just a few days away, and NBC has launched some interesting mobile services to let folks follow the action from wherever they are.

The Vancouver Olympics will clearly be the most mobile accessible Olympics in history, with NBC’s mobile website and apps (2 apps, to be exact) providing the following content:

Live Results & Schedules
TV Online & Listings
Vancouver Information

NBC is also offering text message and email alerts, and you can sign up here to receive them. The nice thing is that you can select which winter olympic events you want to follow, so you’re phone is not getting a text message after every oh-so-exciting curling match (still not sure how curling is considered an olympic event, a sport, or even a hobby).

Now if only Vancouver could get some snow… Enjoy!

MLB Baseball Playoff Scores On Your Mobile Phone

The MLB division races are about to be decided, and October means it’s playoff time for baseball in America. The problem is, you will need to get the scores when you’re waiting in line at the pumpkin patch, the costume store, or wherever you’ll be when your not in front of a screen.

Not to worry. We’ve highlighted a few baseball-related mobile websites in the past that will get the job done. The mobile site from MLB offers baseball scores on your mobile phone, as well as highlights and stories. (A quick look today shows that the Toronto Blue Jays just axed their GM).

For World Series Scores to your mobile, check out the review we did on the CBS Sports Mobile Baseball GameCenter application. Note this is currently available for AT&T and Sprint customers only, and there is a monthly subscription fee. Go here for more details.

Alas, my favorite mobile website for baseball scores, stats, and news is still the one at SportsTap MLB. It’s got the best user interface, and scores are updated close to real-time.

So take your pick. Just don’t forget to save them to your favorites in your mobile browser before you head out!

Southeastern Conference Launches Mobile Website

In a move to broaden exposure of its wildly popular athletic programs, The Southeastern Conference (SEC) recently launched a new mobile website.

The new mobile website displays recent scores, upcoming game schedules, and sports-related news from around the conference. In browsing the site today, I now know that 4th ranked Mississippi plays at USC this Thursday night on ESPN2 in what could be a very close game.

The site also goes a step further by offering instant alerts via cell phone. Users may elect to receive scores or news alerts for the entire conference, or for just a single school.

While this is nothing new in terms of technology, it is certainly exciting to see the SEC on the playing field of the mobile web.
