With March Madness heating up, the Masters right around the corner, and both the NBA and NHL post seasons becoming clearer, it’s time to remind everyone where to find “the worldwide leader in sports” on the mobile web.
ESPN has several mobile properties and services that continue to evolve. Below is a brief snapshot of the most popular services.

As golf fans are well aware, the 2008 Masters is right around the corner. Considering how difficult it is to find time to sit in front of the television for 12 hours over 2 days, this is an ideal event to get scoring alerts to your mobile phone when you are out and about.
Augusta.com, operated by The Augusta Chronicle, provides a showcase of The Masters and also provides information about points of interest in and around Augusta, Georgia.
In addition to plenty of online content about the prestigious golf tournament, including live scoring, the site send scoring updates via SMS for five of your favorite golfers during the tournament. Here is an excerpt explaining what type of alerts you can receive:
Scoring alerts, whether by SMS or e-mail, can be selected at three different levels:
* End of round: Sends one update on the player’s score and position when play finishes each day.
* Hole by hole: Sends an update each time the player finishes a hole, plus end of round.
* All changes: Sends updates anytime the player’s position changes, as well as end of round and hole by hole.
Go here to sign up. If you have one of the newer wireless plans with unlimited text messaging, you might as well go for the All Changes option.
So who will win The Masters this year? The first person to guess the winning golfer AND their winning score will win a sporty new MobileMammoth t-shirt. Just post your guess in a comment to this post.
Rules: One entry per person — if you submit your entry more than once, only your last entry will count. In the event of a tie, the first 3 winning entries will all get a t-shirt. All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, April 9, at 11:59pm ET.
Good luck!!

I just saw the 16th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores hit a 3-pointer with :01 second left to beat 25th-ranked Mississippi State in overtime. Folks, March Madness is officially upon us!
One year ago today, I highlighted one mobile service that will send you NCAA scores to your cell phone. Today, I want to highlight the Fox Sports mobile website.
To access Fox Sport Mobile, navigate to foxsports.com on your mobile browser. Windows Mobile users can also text SPORTS to 36977 (FOXSP). Finally, Fox Sports Mobile Pro is available for download through Jamster.
To find out more about all the features available on Fox Sports Mobile, go here.
Go Commodores!

In case you have not checked lately, there are a host of mobile sites and services that are making everyday life easier for thousands of people just like us. To highlight just a sample, I compiled the following list of 71 things you can do from your mobile phone.
I wanted to make this interactive, so I temporarily left the links off of a few items. Why? So that we can learn from you and everyone else out there. If you have recommendations for what mobile sites or tools to use to accomplish any of the items below, leave a comment to this post and share your knowledge. After February 9, ten of the highest quality commenters will be sent a free MobileMammoth t-shirt, AND I will add the links to the remaining items in the list.
Happy mobile browsing…

We at MobileMammoth.com have put together our Top 7 Mobile Websites from 2007.
If you surf the web from your phone at all, then you really need to consider bookmarking these in your mobile browser. They are all truly useful, and will save you time all year round. So without further delay, here they are:
Top 7 Mobile Wesbites of 2007
- Bloglines (Skweezed)
Bloglines is one of the most popular RSS readers on the web, and now that they’ve integrated Skweezer’s mobile browsing gateway, mobile users are touting it’s ease of use. If you already use Google Reader to browse your RSS feeds, their mobile version will do you just fine.
- The Weather Channel
There are some alternative mobile weather sites out there, but so far the Weather Channel stays on top.
- Yahoo! Mail
You will need to go here and enter your mobile phone number for the link, or type m.yahoo.com into your mobile browser and click on the Mail link.
- Google Search
Much like Yahoo!’s directions, you will need to go here and enter your mobile phone number for the link, or type mobile.google.com into your mobile browser.
- FlightStats
As noted by one of our readers in our mobile website contest, FlightStats provides a variety of useful tools to make sure you optimize your time on travel days.
- Dodgeball
This social networking service lets people “check in” through Dodgeball, which in turn alerts your friends of where you are. There’s a lot more to it, so go check it out.
- ESPN
Still the most comprehensive sports destination, and the mobile interface works well. A visit there today showed one small graphic on the mobile home page (to save bandwidth), and the navigation items on the bottom of the screen where they belong on a mobile display.
And because we always like to exceed expectations, here’s one more site for your mobile browsing pleasure…
- Google Maps
I much prefer Google Maps over MapQuest for its accuracy and intuitive interface. The same holds true for the mobile web. To visit Google Maps for Mobile, click here and enter your mobile number, or text “MYLOCATION” to 33669.
Enjoy these sites, add some more in the comments to this post, and Happy New Year!

Quick, who claims to be The Worldwide Leader in Sports? I’ll give you 5 seconds. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…
Time’s up! If you guessed ESPN, go reward yourself with a free bowl of soup (Caddyshack reference).
You may also know that ESPN offers a mobile website. I’d call it ESPN Mobile, but the actual title of their mobile home page is literally, ESPN:ESPN Main.
Verizon Wireless customers can also access ESPN MVP, which lets mobile users view video highlights from SportsCenter, real-time game updates through GameCast, and access to ESPN fantasy sports leagues.
For more information about how to get access to ESPN through your mobile phone or wireless device, visit the ESPN Mobile Products page.

A reader recently sent us a mobile website with all the latest soccer scores and news updates. To find out how to stay current on the latest soccer news and scores from around the world, keep reading…
From the home page, the site provides direct links to each of the current day’s matches, including scores to those that are already underway. The user can also browse the latest soccer-related news stories from the navigation bar at the top. Today, the top news story includes a photo of the Russia national coach, Guus Hiddink, who just re-signed as their coach through 2010.
The site is not only focused on European soccer, however. I browsed over to the North American scores and easily found information on Major League Soccer (MLS), where is displayed the final standings of the latest season, including the date of the last game played.
I would recommend that the navigation bar be placed at the bottom (instead of the top), which is consistent with today’s mobile web guidelines. Regardless, this mobile website is clean and clutter-free, and we did not see a single ad.
If you’re into soccer, check it out.

Back in June, we told you how to get baseball scores on your phone from the MLB website.
Now that the diamond fans among us are starting to get geeked up about the pennant races shaping up around the league, we thought it would be timely to see what other mobile options are out there.
CBSSportsline Baseball Gamecenter
CBS Sportsline offers a media-rich mobile baseball experience called Baseball Gamecenter. This service provides live, inning-by-inning scores and statistics on every Major League Baseball game. There are different tabs for that day’s scores, the schedule for the next three days, and news from around the league. While viewing the scores, users may select a particular game to view the detailed scoring for that game.
The service is not free, and we’ve included the published fees from the Sportsline website, which list them out by carrier.
Baseball Gamecenter fees by carrier:
| AT&T (Cingular) |
$3.99 per month |
| Nextel |
$4.99 per month |
| Sprint |
$4.99 per month |
| T-Mobile |
$9.99 one-time setup fee |
| Boost |
$4.99 per month |
Source: CBSSportsline.com FAQ
Note that you must have a GSM enabled phone with Internet access to use Baseball Gamecenter.
Hardcore baseball fans that cannot be in front of a TV at gametime might find this to be well worth it, especially when October rolls around. (By the way, if you’ve already tried out Baseball Gamecenter from CBS Sportsline, let us know what you thought by commenting below.)

For the thousands of NFL fantasy football enthusiasts out there, getting any sort of advantage on draft day can make or break a season. But who has the time to read all the fantasy football magazines and websites?
Now you can. Get the latest NFL player news and notes no matter where you are at the Fox Sports mobile website. Hosted by MSN, the site was completely redesigned just in time for the 2007 NFL season.
A quick view of the site today shows an article posted yesterday from Peter Schrager, explaining how the life of a fantasy football regular can easily get consumed beginning in July/August, and continues through the regular season. While we do not recommend getting totally consumed in fantasy football, you might as well enjoy the ride by getting the mobile advantage and having the latest player news in the palm of your hand. Do that, and you too could crush your 2007 fantasy football draft.

With baseball season in full swing, and the MLB All Star game just around the corner, now is a great time to check out the mobile version of the Major League Baseball website.
Thankfully, this mobile website has a simple, clean interface, with minimal images or graphics. This helps the pages load quickly, and fans can get their information and move on.
The mobile MLB site provides nine links from the home page, beginning with the schedule and current scores for that day, baseball news, and current standings. Considering most mobile users are likely to be checking the latest score for their team, the order of the links makes sense.
MLB en Espanol
In addition to these basic, yet essential links, MLB mobile also provides a link to a Spanish version of the latest headlines around the league. Major League Baseball clearly has a large Spanish-speaking fan base, and I’d expect the Spanish section of this mobile site to grow beyond just news in the next year or two.
In addition to the standard mobile website itself, Major League Baseball also provides other mobile services including scoring and news updates by text message (SMS), live in-game coverage (dubbed “GameDay”), baseball ringtones, and live audio and video updates for the cell phone. More information about all the MLB mobile services can be found here, and the mobile team even launched a blog last month to keep users up to date on mobile services. Now that is nice to see!
