Cheap International Phone Calls on Your Mobile Phone
August 29th, 2007 MobileFreak
Do you have friends or family overseas, but can’t stand paying those international calling rates? We recently ran across an interesting new service that will let you lower those phone bills, even while calling from your mobile phone. Continue reading to find out how…
Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Rebtel assigns local phone numbers to the user’s international contacts. Once signed up, users simply call their contacts directly from their mobile phone (or landline) using these new local numbers. Once the initial registration is complete, there is no software to install, and no log-in is necessary to make the calls.
Here are some sample international calling rates, according to Rebtel:
For five dollars, you could talk for:
* 4 hours 37 minutes to the USA (mobiles)
* 4 hours 10 minutes to Australia (landlines)
* 4 hours 23 minutes to China (mobiles)
* 3 hours 28 minutes to Mexico (landlines)
As you can see, calling from your mobile phone or your landline phone can have an impact on your rate. While browsing various rates from the U.S., we found that most of the rates for mobile phone calls were slightly higher than calls made from a landline phone. Regardless, the mobile rates were still significantly lower than today’s standard international calling rates.
New users may sign up for the service through their desktop website here, or on their mobile website here.
At the time of this posting, Rebtel works in 37 countries listed here.
This service will take some getting used to, but to it’s credit, Rebtel has clearly attempted to make the service as easy to use as possible. Rebtel is one option you should try the next time you pick up your mobile phone to call your sister in Beijing or your cousin in Sao Paulo.
