I've got a rather old Sony Ericsson with UMTS and the gmail app works blindingly fast. Especially compared to using the mobile website. The built-in email app isn't worth even trying. I started out with it to test mobile email speed vs SMS in using our application and there is basically no difference. Gmail seems to check for new messages every 3-4 minutes or you can refresh, but it posts faster than my work email. Definitely a big fan! I use the Gmail App on my Blackberry 8830 and it’s amazing.
