Guess Sale Price for Find.mobi, Win a T-Shirt

May 2nd, 2008 MobileFreak

A month after we highlighted the find.mobi mobile search site, dotMobi is putting it up for sale. As reported in a press release on Wednesday, the site has “outgrown the lab”, and is now ready to deliver “significant value” to the buyer.

How much do you think it will go for? $500,000? $1,000,000? More?

Note from the press release all that buyers might be getting:

dotMobi is soliciting proposals for the disposal of all or parts of the find.mobi assets, which include the mobile web site (find.mobi), web crawler algorithm and code, mobile site detection algorithm and code, parking / landing page detection algorithm and code, adult content classifier learning algorithm and code, and the find.mobi name / site address.

Submit your guess in a comment to this post by Monday, May 19, 2008. The top 3 entries closest to the published sale amount will win a MobileMammoth T-Shirt! All entries must be posted by 11:59pm ET (GMT -0500) on May 19.

I think it will go for about $205,000 US Dollars. The dotMobi campaign hasn’t really caught on, as analysts correctly predicted. Plus, the mobile web still has yet to find a revenue model, as moble users tend not to click ads.

That being said, I think it will be tough to get any enormous bids for find.mobi until mobile web searching provides an economic return.

$1.4 million

This just as a landing page without the other additional benefits is worth this alone.

I think the issue with the previous silent auctions is that none of the names have had truly mobile relevance, so that whilst they’ve raised $800,000 in the October event most of the more mobile orientated domain names failed to the reach the minimum.

As find.mobi is the perfect sweetspot - expect a big number.

Cheers,
Dean Collins

That’s it, that’s the one!

I think $740,000. The .mobi part is going to catch on more and more as the younger generations find and create new websites geared at mobile phones.

Thanks for all the entries! 3 out of the 8 will receive a free MobileMammoth t-shirt.
Shelley’s entry on 5/19/08 is the last official contest entry, though others should feel free to take a stab at it just for fun. Heck, maybe if someone else guesses within $10,000, we’ll give away a fourth T-shirt.
Now all we have to do is wait for the actual sale. Stay tuned!

Lol - i was trying to work out where the 19th was mentioned as the decision date anywhere on the .mobi site.

Now i understand why you picked a random close date.

I cant believe people think this domain is worth less than $200k

Cheers,
Dean

Yup - totally random date Dean. Although like I said, people can still take a stab at it and if they are close enough, we might just throw them a t-shirt as well.

If anyone finds the sale price before me, definitely post it!
