How to Launch Star Wars from OpenOffice.org Calc and More

August 11th, 2008 MobileFreak

Remember the early days of Windows apps when developers would hide small games or other programs within the applications? These quickly became known as ‘Easter Eggs’. It became cool to know how to find these hidden tricks.

Thankfully, those days are far from gone. One easter egg that is fairly well known among OpenOffice users but is still worth a mention is the retro Star Wars game found within the spreadsheet application called Calc.

Here’s the command:

Enter =GAME(“StarWars”) in a cell, and you are back in 1983 playing a Centipede-like version of Star Wars.

I do not use OpenOffice, but I’ll tell you where I found about this tip — it’s from a small new mobile website called HowToDude.mobi. Like it’s desktop cousin, this ‘How To’ site displays a tag cloud of topics to select from. Each How To is submitted from various users. I found several cocktail recipes, and even more techie tips, of course.

The site is very young and the content is still growing, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. If nothing more than to find a few more software easter eggs.
