Make Free Calls from Your Cell Phone
November 20th, 2006 MobileFreak
Skype launched its first mobile voice-over-IP (VOIP) service in conjunction with UK-based network operator 3 Group late last week. The service, which will require a cell phone data plan subscription from 3 Group, will let UK customers make free cell phone voice calls to other 3 Group Skype customers as well as PC-based Skype users around the world. The service will be made available beginning December 1.
This announcement is noteworthy not just for those in the UK, but also for Skype users anywhere in the world. The bottom line is that if you are a current Skype user and make frequent calls to Europe, Australia, or Hong Kong (where 3 Group currently operates), you’ll want to check this out.
If your friends subscribe to 3Group, then you could be in luck. The word “free” almost always comes with an asterisk, and this time it means users must subscribe to one of 3 Group’s cell phone data plans. These plans will include unlimited voice calls, and that is what makes this service very intriguing for those that don’t mind saving money on their phone bills.
This is not Skype’s first venture into wireless (check out SkypeOut). Many mobile phone operators are reluctant to allow Skype clients on their handsets, and 3 Group is one of the first to promote it.
It’s always nice to see new cell phone tools or software that lets us lower our cell phone bills! So stay tuned and we will keep you posted as more become available.
