Save Gas Money With Your Mobile Phone

The price of crude oil just reached an all time high today, reaching $92 per barrel. And with no indication that OPEC will agree to increase supply, nor that tension in the Middle East will subside anytime soon, it’s not looking much better. Not good for our gas guzzling cars. So what does this have to do with mobile websites?
Well, our friends at GasBuddy now have a mobile website to help you save at the pump. Servicing the US and Canada, the mobile version has a simple interface with one text box where the user enters a city and state, or a zip code. The site returns recent prices from gas stations in that area, including the price per gallon, name of the station, and the cross streets.
The data is provided primarily by the users, and therefore not all locations have data on gas prices. I tried a few zip codes here in the Washington DC area, with no results. Then a search on a certain Beverly Hills zip code returned four results, ranging from $3.11 to $3.35 per gallon (Would not have guessed that Beverly Hills folks worry too much about gas prices).
I’d sure like to see a link to a map of the location, as I don’t always know where all the streets are even in my home zip code. Even providing the full address, rather than just cross streets, would be a start. Regardless, this is a good start and it does not look like the issue of high gas prices will be going away anytime this decade. Thanks GasBuddy!
