The Real Vision Behind the iPod Touch

September 9th, 2008 MobileFreak

Apple iPod TouchIn case you’ve been in meetings or class all day, you may not have notice the loud buzz coming from just about everywhere about the slew of new Apple products announced today.

All the details on the iPod Nano, the iPod touch, and of course Steve’s presentation can be found here, here, and even there too.

But what I am most impressed with is Apple understanding the potential of the iPod touch. When you take a step back and think pre-touch, having the vision to see that an iPhone without the phone can still be a hugely valuable and popular tool is impressive.

Even when the iPod touch launched, it took the general public a little while to realize just exactly what it was. “Isn’t it just like an iPod nano?” No. “Oh then it must be an iPhone.” Nope.

The iPod touch It is this beautiful space in between, that let’s everyone enjoy the non-phone features of the iPhone, the most important of which is access to the growing number of applications that are available at the iTunes App Store. And for the thousands of techno-geeks that are waiting for an Android phone but still want to be part of the Apple party, the iPod touch is the perfect answer.

So, you are basically saying that the main use to an ipod touch is for those of us that can’t get our hands on an iphone? I mean, I basically agree but it doesn’t seem like a very long term product for apple if it is the only space it truly fills. I suppose in a way its genius for apple to do this since the ipod touch buyers are going to be very inclined to buy an iphone as well (unless they end up liking the touch). Two sales on one product basically…

It’s a weird vision behind iPhone but well, that’s the need of some people to have something better than iPod but don’t want the phone function of iPhone.
